New Moon
Frust
From Austria, comes Post Black Metal band FRUST, a one-man project. From their EPK, “While the first EP “Elements” was heavily influenced by Black Metal, this first full-length experimented with Horror Metal, Doom, and dreamy instrumentals. On the second album “The Advent of Adhara,” FRUST kept its diversity, while “Full Moon” combines the adventures of all past works.” The album has eleven songs, and “Chaos” is first. It has a heavy edge to it, with some muted production, dissonance, and thick bass notes. As it marches forward, it crushes everything in its path, as chaos would. “Thats Enough” has a devastatingly low sound that stretched deep. What is down there is dark, and absolutely cold to the touch. Horror elements are ushered in from there, putting a stamp of fright on the song.
“Autumn” marches forward with all of the death associated with that time of year. It’s a time where leaves fall of the trees, plants and flowers go underground, and it signals the inevitable fall of winter. The song has all of those qualities and more. “Summer Rain” is clearly one of the dreamy instrumentals Mario was talking about in the beginning. It is melodic fun, and has positive tones, a sharp departure from some of the other songs. “To Die For” swings the opposite direction, with a fierce landscape of despondence gloom, and hardened elements somewhere between Black Metal and Doom. It’s amazing how quickly Mario can turn the page. “Destiny” is another dark offering, and the title brings up images of one’s path turning over to the dark side of life. Once you go down there, you can never open to door to the light once again.
The title track however bounces once again with the light, and I get images of children in a playground together, passing the afternoon with a spritz of energy and good times to boot. “On the Last Day” is another jovial song, but also has some depressive elements, and I get the smooth vibe of the band SADNESS here. “I was nix mehr” is stern from the vocal screams, but Mario let the melody ride out here, and the juxtaposition of the two makes for a memorable listening experience. “Verfall III.” closes the album. There are dark tones, but the melody is still there, and leaves you feeling a bit unsettled in the end. Some might say the album suffers from a clear sense of identity, but as a music fan, I know exactly where Mario comes from. Sometimes you feel like breaking things in a fit of anger, while other times you feel calm and gentle and want songs to reflect that. This album is a nice combination of the two, and it just works.
