We Set the World on Fire
Freaks And Clowns
For a young band that walks the path of traditional Heavy Metal today is something that needs to be done with wisdom. These words mean that the genre is extremely erode by time and the use (it was born more than 50 years ago), so to play it needs of the band to put some young energy and approach to make things work. And the Swedish quintet FREAKS AND CLOWNS seems to understand such idea, because their third album, "We Set the World on Fire" is really a very good release.
It's not so hard to describe their musical work with words: a modern and aggressive mix between 70% of traditional Heavy Metal (based especially on influences of JUDAS PRIEST) and 30% of Hard Rock and Glam Metal influences (the main cause for the charming melodies and hooking choruses). It's full of a young and nasty energy that make their music ferocious as Creepy Badger ("Hiya, buddy!"), and it's really amazing and spontaneous. On the studio, the band worked in a form that's the opposite of what they present on their songs: the sonority is pointing that they really worked hard, putting things clean and defined, but balancing it with a heavy load of aggressiveness and weight. It's really an excellent work, and the songs are worthy of it.
These freaks really created a remarkable set of songs, being all of them really show that they set their gears to keep the fans breathless as the album plays on. And to a first time on it, songs as "Am I a Freak or Just a Monster" (amazing set of melodies with a massive weight coming from bass guitar and drums), "We Set the World on Fire" (a really heavy and fun song, filled with excellent melodies and a great chorus, and the vocals are really excellent when the fan get used to them), "When Evils Got a Hold on You" and "Hell Raising Woman" (both are showing great sets of riffs are expelled by the guitars, and another two remarkable choruses), "Scream Until You Like It" (an abrasive melodic ambience that was usual for Glam Metal acts during the 80's, with a clear accessible appeal), "Dogs of War" (another set of aggressive melodies can be heard being expelled by the guitars, creating the right ambience for the vocals), "Fight Fire With Fire" (the strong and weighty work on bass guitar is the support of the song's aggressive and melodic strength), and... Well, the best is to hear all of the songs, because it's not hard to do it (and to get addicted on the album).
The work of FREAKS AND CLOWNS really deserves to be heard and enjoyed by all Metalheads. If you don't like "We Set the World on Fire", the problem resides in your ears.
