Forty Winters - Rotting Empire album cover

These are talented guys, but the basic and boring song writing leaves this album very much in the middle of the road.  It isn't a terrible album but it just doesn't hold my interest.  Yes, it's heavy, fast, and full of anger but it makes for better background/workout music than something you might actually want to sit down and listen to. Metalcore is a genre not well known for its diversity but this band could definitely use some.

The vocals are powerful and in your face but they are also very boring; think of the constant shout/screaming combination from HATEBREED and you'll have a good idea of how he sounds.  His vocal approach really pulls the songs down and they start to bleed together within just a few minutes.  Fortunately, the album isn't very long so by the time you get bored it's probably going to be over or close to it at least.  "Human Sacrifice" features some low death metal style growls from him that break up the pace but they are few and far between.

The drumming is a barrage of non-stop hammering but it just doesn't go anywhere. When every song on the album is about playing brutal drums for the sake of it, it becomes impossible for me to choose anything that stands out. The guitar riffs, while definitely heavy and dark, are just the same old typical down tuned heavy break down riffs we have heard a thousand times before.  As with everything else I've mentioned, they are not bad but there just isn't anything that makes that stands out.

In fact, you could put this album in, put on any random song, and hear everything it has to offer in about three minutes.  If you want to showcase a heavy and fast album, this one will fill that void.  But if you want music that will stick with you because of musical depth and interesting hooks, then look elsewhere because it is about as shallow as a kiddy pool.
