Under Saturn Retrogade
Forgotten Tomb

After releasing four studio albums and taking some time off, the Italian Black / Doom Metal band FORGOTTEN TOMB stroke once again with their fifth album "Under Saturn Retrograde" that kept with their Modern sound from their earlier material.
The opening track "Reject Existence" started with an atmospheric riff that reminded me of the modern PARADISE LOST, later on, when the song developed a little more, I noticed the twist of the C part as it suddenly very slow and melodic while applying the right negative mood that described the band style through the years.
With this so emotional material, followed up by the negative emotions with a darkened gothic atmosphere in each song, I could surely hear the KATATONIA references mixed with the PARADISE LOST material throughout the Doom Metal style. However, I noticed a lack of the guitars expression. The entire guitar work was mainly rhythm based that combined nicely and fitted to the tracks but something was missing, there was no lead section or a development in the rhythms. I noticed it on the song "I Wanna Be Your Dog", which the riffs repeated themselves over and over without any innovation.
On the other hand, I liked the integration between the clean vocals in the veins of Nick Holmes with the strong evil growls especially on their song"Joyless". The self-titled song, "Under Saturn Retrogade", divided into two parts, had differences between the parts. The first one is a fast Black Metal tune while the second was a slower Doom Metal monstrosity that represented the band's combination on this album.
