Forever Still - Breathe in Colours album cover

FOREVER STILL began to gather attention in 2016 with the release of "Tied Down".  The song writing for the album was basically handled by Maja Shining and multi-instrumentalist Mikkel Haastrup. Now with their sophomore effort, "Breath In Colours," the two decided to bring in their long time live drummer, Rune Frisch, for a more collaborative effort. This is a huge step for the two talented musicians who have done everything on their own, from music videos, band photos, to even the album production. Not wanting a carbon copy of the previous album, the band decided to work with a futuristic and dystopian theme. Let us dive right on into the music and kill this curiosity.

The first track, "Rewind," begins with some futuristic synth for a few seconds before the song really pumps up the volume. Maja's voice is simply surreal. There seems to be some type of magic here because her voice is just beautiful. The music is well orchestrated around her talent. Her calls of "Rewind to the last time you were broken" lead into some beautiful guitar work while the drums only amplify her voice. The title track, "Breathe In Colours," begins in with some heavy, soft tones. The drum rolls push the guitars into another dimension. The torque of the chorus thrusts you back into your seat as Maja screams and presses the song into a heavier direction. The vocal range is really shown throughout the song and really gives this EVANESCENCE vibe.

"Do Your Worst" is another heavy hitting song where the vocals still seem like an angel singing. What can I really say, the lady can sing. The power riffs still hit you hard like a stone. If the previous haven't got your head to swaying, then this one surely will. "Pieces" has you believing Amy Lee is singing on this piece. The verse is merely a synth and vocals, but as the chorus kicks you in the face with the guitars and piano. Maja's call of "I can't save myself" fills the songs breakdown and you can really feel the emotion being exerted. "Say your Goodbyes" brings you back to the soft vocals to begin the song. The instrumental that accompanies Maja's soft voice is this strange aura filled by piano. As she sings "And if I dream now" the guitars come again with this slow heaviness that enthralls your heart. It is just another beautifully crafted song that just encapsulates you. "Embrace The Tide" takes you back to that heavy sound that has filled the entire album. It is another masterpiece that your ears cannot walk away from. I am awestruck with the sounds that flow through this song. It involves so much that it is very hard to explain.

As we have watched Metal evolve over the years, I feel there is so much talent that is overlooked by a lot of female fronted bands. This band is not one of them. Nuclear Blast have seen the talent of these musicians and have unleashed them unto our ears. With bands like LACUNA COIL, EVANESCENCE, and HALESTORM always being the front runners for such a long time, it is time bands such as FOREVER STILL get their time to shine. I can see them opening or even headlining their own shows and simply wowing the crowd.
