FOREFATHER is a Black Metal band from the UK born in 1999. They reissued a few of their earlier releases and "Ours Is The Kingdom" is the fourth reissue release. Originally released in 2004, the album was highly recommended. We get a chance to see how the band has grown with Heidens Hart Records. The album comes in with twelve tracks and a listening time of just over 66 minutes. It was re-released in November 2017.
The opening track "The Shield-Wall" comes screaming in with crazy fast drums. Much like something you would think a midfield battle would sound like; intense, brutal, and chaotic. At about 2:20, we get a bit of a tempo change that keeps the track intriguing and also brings about a vocal change. To this point we have heard clean male vocals, now enters the gnarly spitfire vocals. This track lives up to its name. It has some Folkish Viking styling along with some incredible Black Metal play.
"Proud To Be Proud", track three, comes in super similarly as track one. The drums sound almost exactly the same. This time, the growled vocals open with the cleans following. The tempo does change up a bit, but the over sound seems all too familiar. Track seven, "To The Mountains They Fled", has a nice and esthetically pleasing sound. It was a nice deviation from an album that keeps a similar tempo throughout. It was a little slower, a little deeper, and the bass has some incredible play.
"The Folk That Time Forgot", track eight, is one of my favorite tracks on the album. It has a much more Progressive feeling along with that classic chunky bass. Me, enjoying a more Progressive track, who would have thought it? Well I do, and to be honest, it's one of the best tracks on the album. Not just because of the more Progressive sound, but because there were many elements mixed in this track that allows the listener a more mix genre experience.
"Rebel Of the Marshlands", track eleven, continues with a more blast beat-y track, but the tempo is a bit slower, creating a much different feel than from the beginning. Again, the track does sound battle ready, but this one is more leading up to the battle. It's another stand out track from FOREFATHER.
The final track "Fighters If the Angelcynn" comes in almost like an anthem. It's a bit off, when considering the rest of the album, but that does not mean it's bad. It is very different. It is enjoyable. It is the perfect ending to an epic battle journey.
FOREFATHER's "Ours is the Kingdom" is a legendary story that gives life to the battlefield. This album is perfect for those who enjoy a more Viking take on Metal. The battles were real and they live on.
