House at the Centre of the Universe
Flitcraft
From their record label's website, "FLITCRAFT is the personal project of Hard Rock/Heavy Metal musician Phillip T. King. Last seen on vocals and guitar in 70's influenced Psych-rockers BUTTERFLY, and on vocals in Traditional/Speed metallers GALAXY, King's new project falls somewhere in between those previous musical adventures. It's hard rock with quirk, traditional heavy metal with a twist. Part heavy and part lite, part psychedelic and part progressive; FLITCRAFT is strange, yet familiar music, for strange, yet familiar times. The album has nine songs.
"Error Era (2137)" is the first. At first, the riff is low, and dirty, and there are heavy elements present. Then, it segues into a faster and more aggressive riff. The vocals are fairly high in the register and the song is all about the energy it produces. "Earth is Not a Perfect Sphere" is a more mid-tempo rocker with spacy electronic in the beginning. The vocals are just a bit pitchy at times but there is also something endearing about them. The cadence here in them is odd, however, as he alternates between held legato notes and super-fast speech. "I Forgot Everything (Research at Dive Bars)" is a funny title for a song. It has a bit of a swing mostly from the vocals, but the music keeps up as well. If nothing else, the band doesn't take themselves too seriously.
"Chrysalistless (Uly's Lament)" is indeed a sad, lamenting song, with clean strums opening the song. The vocals are harmonious and catchy. The slide guitar leads help to solidify the sound. "Galactic Road Trip (Wayworn Travellers)" is a faster moving song, still with some depressive qualities, but the guitars kick you in the ass and beg you to get up and take the trip. A heavier sound picks up after the half way mark. "Mother Jane (Mnemosyne)" is very short and depressive song with clean guitars and spoken words. "Smoko with Sisyphus" is a longer song with more longing qualities. The smooth and easy song is reminiscent of how one might feel after a long smoke...relaxed, and mellow.
"The Pyre of John McDonald" is another storytelling song for sure, though I am not certain who the subject is. The music is again melancholy, along with the vocals. The harmonies in the chorus are beguiling, and this might be the best song on the album. "The House (Entering, Redintegration, Mother Reprise, Era's End)" closes the album. It moves slowly at first, dragging a mile of sand behind it. It picks up after the first chorus with a galloping gaunt. Overall, this was a decent album from an obviously talented musician at the helm. The music was good, but could have benefitted from some more dynamism in my opinion. I don't really here many Progressive elements either, but that is neither here nor there.
