It has been a long time since I last received a release like this one. Nowadays we don't get much of this one-man-bands that belong to the Black Metal scene. Things have changed and even the underground scene has in some extent lost interest in this type of works. So, despite the current trend FIR BOLG come to re-release the 2008 demo under new artwork and release package. This band features Dagoth as the only studio member and a group of session musicians for all the live occasions.
First of all, I have to confess that the original cover artwork was more enticing with the band's logo in the middle and a snowy mountain ridge on the back. This cover had the old-school atmosphere that I believe fits better the music of the four tracks Dagoth has prepared for all the folk Black Metal followers. Nevertheless, they say that 'do not judge a book by its cover' and that is exactly what I will do in the following lines.
So, "Night Of The Black Moon" is the CD opener that describes the music identity at ease through the repetitive guitar riff and monotonous drum pattern and the single pitch Black Metal vocals. Although, I am not a Black Metal expert I can identify the 'old school' layer of FIR BOLG that likes the music served through plain compositions without keyboards props or any symphonic orientations. Dagoth keeps things simple and hence 100% atmospheric and evil. The folk underlying layers will create snow covered landscapes that during summer time are mostly welcome. If one tries to name some of the band's influences those will have to be early BATHORY, IMMORTAL (in the vocals) and generally bands from the Norwegian planes where Black Metal is still raw. The minimum keyboards work in "Celtic Death Pagan Ritual" does not actually fit in the pagan attitude of this track but fortunately their contribution is kept minimal and distinct. I really like the clean guitar sounds and the strange to my ears tuning.
"Invocate The Old Spirits Of Wwoods" dives deeper into the blackness with fast drumming and out of the lair vocals. Again the keyboards spoil the primitive atmosphere that returns along with the IMMORTAL sounding vocals. This mini CD closes with the fast "The Passage To A Second Life". Here the killer guitar riffs go hand-in-hand with the faster tempo that preambles the something like violin sounds during which an epic atmosphere rains FIR BOLG music.
This is quite nice release without breaking new grounds that will satisfy those metalheads who have still a hunger for primitive Black Metal served with a pagan/folk flavor. The CD comes in only 1000 copies so, if you want it, you have to move fast!
