Fenriz' Red Planet & Nattefrost - Engangsgrill album cover

It's year 1989 and Fenriz records a Doom song for a solo group that he called PILGRIM SANDS back then. Although this project didn't have any follow-up works and, as he writes inside the booklet of this split - I don't have this track anymore, his Doom lust stayed on. So, in 1993 and between the Black Metal frosty storms that DARKTHRONE released, he recorded these three songs in Necrohell Studio, this time under the RED PLANET name. Probably this Doom feel evaporated either with VALHALL, or in some ISENGARD songs; maybe he was bored with the sound, the fact is that he didn't record anything else with parallel sound. This tape remained buried 'by time and dust' and was given to very few persons, among them Apollyon in the beginning and later to Nattefrost and this is the first time that metalheads can hear this stuff. And surely this is the centre of attraction for this split release.
Fenriz's side includes guitars that sound like they are buried inside a mire and an atmosphere influenced by psycho antibiotics from the 70s or the 60s. This Doom aesthetics can be analyzed in components like CANDLEMASS, BLACK SABBATH, TROUBLE or REVELATION. All of the songs are really very good. Especially My Ship Sailed Without Me has fantastic vocal melodies close to ST. VITUS or PENTAGRAM. This song will be spinning in your mind right from the first time. Very nice is also Jon Carter, Man On Mars which is more doomish while the a la CELTIC FROST intro riff of Temple Of The Red Dawn Rising makes you realize who is behind this project. This song is the most 'burned', having something like a rotten psychedelia inside.
The split becomes something like an asshole with Nattefrost's side. From the whole five songs, two of them are only useful as proclaiming endless laughing; you know, something like comedy. More specifically, Uskyldighrt is like a Rock-n'-Roll-meets-MOTORHEAD abomination, so horrible that honestly during its length your belly will die in pain from your laughter. Same goes to the wanna-be 'extreme' Lustmord that has an idiot telling some stupidities about serial killers. Fuck them all, here we have horse shit and flies above it. The other three songs, Nekronaut II Nekro Spirituals, Sin Goddammit and Humiliated And Pissed Upon are like his personal albums. Things that I have heard thousands times. I really love this HELLHAMMER-ish necro style but here we are close to the boundaries of fraud. Without passion, no lust, mediocre vocals, lamblike music...
It's a shame that Fenriz's songs stand behind this shity bullshit. It could have been an EP. Anyway, the disc worth's a lot only by having them.
