Old City New Ruins
Feldspar
Since the day acts as DISCHARGE, AGNOSTIC FRONT, D.R.I., S.O.D., SUICIDAL TENDENCIES, CRYPTIC SLAUGHTER, C.O.C., CRO-MAGS, RATOS DE PORÃO, M.D.C., and others started to break the boundaries between Hardcore and Thrash Metal, Crossover was born, but Metal acts as NUCLEAR ASSAULT used many Hardcore elements on its Thrash Metal core. But there are endless ways to play Crossover, so it comes to happen to the sextet FELDSPAR as well, as heard on “Old City New Ruins”. Working with Nick Terry (who has works with acts as TURBONEGRO, KVELERTAK, PEACHES and more on his curriculum) on the production, the idea was to bring some different insights to their music, and things worked in a way that the sonority is defined and clean, but with an excellent result: clean, and the Hardcore/crossover side of the band’s music becomes evident for itself.
And the cover is a creation of Chris Wilson, an American renowned illustrator who put on it a very good dose of social criticism along with a fun appeal.Even working on a Hardcore/Crossover trend, the band’s music obeys no law, because they can sound melodic and accessible (pay attention to the charming melodies of “What Makes Us Stay?” and “Dead Friends Still Alive”) or nasty and aggressive as traditional for the genre (as heard clearly on “18 Karat” and “Your Resistance is Not Only Futile but Also Pathetic”, both clearly influenced by NYHC). But’s it’s always very good, full of energy and able to satisfy even the most complaining fan that can exist. Yes, it’s really very good.
Their musical work is mature and above any non-sense criticism from some fanatical fans of Hardcore, so it’s better surrender when dealing with “What Makes Us Stay?” (even with some aggressive traces, this one is plenty of hooking melodies inherited from Rock ‘n’ Roll, with very good contrasts between male and female vocals), “Cobblestones” (this one is into a more melodic Hardcore way, with fine guitars and choirs), “Dead Friends Still Alive” (again the melodic Pop Punk Rock side of the band’s music is in evidence on this one), “18 Karat”, “Your Resistance is Not Only Futile but Also Pathetic” (both are filled with that old and good set of Hardcore elements, with nasty and hooking guitar riffs), “The Jester’s Revolt” (a bit more melodic, this one bears some touched inherited from Hard Rock, with very good work on bass guitar and drums), “Scalp is an Ashtray”, “All Quiet (Huff and Puff)” (some dirty influences of MOTÖRHEAD can be heard here), “Beach Bums of Santa”, “God is Fired” and “Old City New Ruins”.
The fans can expect great things of “Old City New Ruins” when dealing with it, and FELDSPAR is a very good Hardcore/Crossover new name.
