From their record label’s website, “Drummer Freddie Allen explains the concept of the album: “The album “Video” and in particular the song “Let's Go Rent A Video” is about growing up in the 80's and 90's and how great it was to have access to a local video store. The whole idea about going there as a group or alone and deciding on what you were going to watch. It was something you could spend a whole night on, a pastime, something to occupy your thoughts for quite a while. These days we are struggling with our attention spans for just a few seconds. The video era was the opposite of that, everything took time.” In a way, listening to the album as a whole is also about that. It takes you on a journey through a lost era, but it is an era which you can rediscover and relive through great music and films. This album is our way of saluting that great era. The sound is a bit pinker and fluffier than the last two albums, which we hope might be to the liking of all you AOR lovers out there. This one's for you.”
The album has ten songs, and “Meet Me on the Corner” is first. The riff definitely has an 80’s feeling of nostalgia to me, and Alex has a great voice. As with a lot of AOR, the big hook comes in the chorus. “Let’s Go Rent a Video” is literally what us teenagers would do on a weekend. It has a nice mix of guitars and keyboards, and more hooks in the chorus. “Christine” is a mid-tempo rocker that has a tough riff and some backing keys. You can feel the longing for her in the drawn out notes in the chorus…was she a love lost? The bridge is very melodic as well and it ties in nicely with the song. “The Wall” is real ball of energy, driving forward sternly and not stopping at any red lights. The melody is another big hook that provides fuel for the drive.
“In the Bay of Blood” is a song that exposes your heart, and your feelings, and tugs them into the tale. Even know there are cautionary notes in this song, the chorus delivers another catchy hook. “Tomorrow is Another Day” reminds us all that we have the promise of tomorrow, and I can’t think of a better way to lift someone’s spirit. Keyboards and vocals start off the song, and an emotional lead break follows. The slow and steady pulse is meant to ground you, to let you know that everything is OK. “Savage Streets” closes the album, and it’s another slow and tender sound that knows when to dial up emotions. I don’t mind the “pink and fluffy” at all, and I found the album to be a great revival of a sound that was so important in my youth. It’s hard to create original music in this genre, but FANS OF THE DARK put their own stamp on things and their own personality into the music. It will make you feel good, and make you feel alive.
