Firenze, Italy based four piece Psychedelic Doom Metal band FANGS OF THE MOLOSSUS have released a limited vinyl reissue of their self titled debut album "Fangs of the Molossus". The record starts off all slow and spacey in the first song of the album, "Caligula". After a couple of minutes singer Amp Zilla joins in for a bit to sing 'Caligula', and the guitars resemble some less fast early BLACK SABBATH's Tony Iommi playing, until they speed up a little at the end of the song for a cool little guitar solo.
Song number two, "Cult of the Witch Goddess", starts off equally heavy and slow, with more early Heavy Metal like riffs and an equal atmosphere. When Amp Zilla starts to sing over the heavy bass line, and the guitars join in, you can hear even more Tony Iommi influences, but also something of the space rock legends HAWKWIND, if I'm not mistaken.
"I Drink Your blood" sounds just as the first two songs do, which in this case is a good thing, but with a little more free and improvised guitar playing by guitarist Count J Vendetta and with some more singing. The atmosphere, however, does not change one bit. Maybe it gets even a little better and heavier.
"O Fera Flagella" is something else. It's more sounds than music, actually, with at the end an Italian voice over, which makes this song probably the most spacy of them all, but paradoxically also the least interesting one.
FANGS OF THE MOLOSSUS finish with "Dead King Rise", a ten minute long trip into the mind of some crossover dude who's half metalhead and half neo-hippie. More heavy guitar riffs finish the album off in style.
In the end you'll notice you'll have unconsciously been banging your head on the easy, although heavy rhythm of the music all this time. I'm glad of the band's decision to release this reissue, or else I'd have probably never discovered this deliciously spacey and psychedelic Hard Rock and Heavy Metal band. There are only 500 copies available, one hundred in red and four hundred in black, so get off your lazy ass and go buy one!<
