False Flag - Nest Of Vipers album cover

Formed in 2012, Canadian based band FALSE FLAG has produced their second EP, their latest release after "Suffer In Silence" was released in late 2014. FALSE FLAG seems to be all over the place with their sound on this EP, it's a little bit Hardcore, some Death Metal thrown in there and a dash of Prog. FALSE FLAG'S style seems to be unfiltered, all encompassing "Metal". Each track has a different sound vocally and musically, it gives me the impression that FALSE FLAG are still trying to nail a "core" sound. Whatever the reason is for their alternating style is really a non-issue, it doesn't change the fact that "Nest Of Vipers" is a great premier EP for FALSE FLAG. The EP showcases the band's arsenal of musical knowledge and skill and personally, I can't wait to hear what their next full album will sound like. The only problem I have with "Nest Of Vipers" is the track "Perfidious", I don't really like what they did with the vocals on the track, they are semi-clean, monotone and droning. They don't quite fit the harsh, seemingly random guitar squeals and the song drags at an excruciating slow pace, the track honestly disoriented me when I first heard it. And while musical head-changes are pretty cool, this track left me with a confused headache; although the track does get better after the aforementioned problems fade into a killer guitar solo.

Aside from "Perfidious", the other tracks on the EP are coherent and well put together. The first track, "Sacrifice Of Solitude" has a non-stop Hardcore feel, it really highlights the vocal talent in FALSE FLAG, the vocals are strong and the singer is able to belt out long, harsh notes in rapid succession. The third track, "Reversion Of Sin" is a bit slower than the tracks that precede it. The heavily distorted bass drones on while the guitar licks play clear, alluring scales making the track a sort of Prog-Death fusion. The fourth track, "Nest Of Vipers"  has a fairly simplistic guitar riff but some seriously complicated drum beats. Once again, I have to give praise to the vocals on this track, they retain the sort of "Death Metal" vocals present throughout the EP but take on a sort of Nu-Metal harmony. FALSE FLAG proves themselves to be a diversely talented powerhouse of Metal, encompassing all the best traits of the styles that inspire them.<
