The Sun and the Flood
Eye Beyond Sight

This is really getting exhausting - more exhausting then running a double marathon with a pregnant elephant on your back - more exhausting then trying to read a book or sit through church. What I'm referring to is the constant examples I find to add to my ever growing list of decent bands with terrible vocalists. EYE BEYOND SIGHT gets the 2012 medal for "Most Unnecessary Vocals", if it existed. Maybe it should
The riffing is good (enough), several melodies are very well-constructed in their balance of heavy and catchy. It's nothing to wake the neighbours to let them know, but it works well enough and it doesn't sound like they are trying to do something they can't. The drum work present is definitely drum work, and that's all I'm going to say about that. Really, I'm just trying to get the good parts out of the way so I can start to throw some shit balls - it's a lot more fun.
And those shit balls being thrown are directed right at the vocals. If you have read any of my past reviews, then you know I don't much care for the Hardcore vocal style - that overdone shout that has no dynamic quality and basically is just shit-covered chocolate. I can also tell that they hold the microphone waytoo close to their mouths, because you can practically feel the beads of spit hitting the speakers.
I know I am not being fair, I know, believe me, I know. But I don't really care. I'm more enraged that a talented band with quality musical skill and song writing chose to take such a terrible creative choice in vocal output. Why? Why? Why?I feel almost like a husband sobbing over his wife's fresh carcass. Some of the music within is really, really good. But the second the vocals kick in all I can do is grumble under my breath and breathe an exasperated sigh of annoyance.
Maybe we need to try again. Yes, I do believe a mulligan would do. Let's get the gang back in the studio and re-do this whole thing. I'm sending this album back like an under-cooked steak. Put it back on the grill and heat it up a bit longer until it stops mooing. That's what this album needs. It needs fresh vocals that tone it down a fucking bit. And while we're at it, let's add some more bass in the mix and make the album cover a bit less stupid.
So, we leave on a sour note. What could have been great, or at least really good, has now decided to regurgitate a Denver omelette all over itself and wallow in it, for some reason. And that's sad, because Denver omelette's never taste the same coming back up as they do going down.
