Nevereinding Pain - Everlasting Sorrow
Existential Emptiness
During the 70's, it was extremely usual to hear Progressive Rock bands filling an entire LP with only two songs. Maybe it was due the limitation that one must hear one side, then the other. In the age of CDs, the things came to a point that some bands dared to record only one music on one album, as EDGE OF SANITY did on "Crimson" (on 1996, it was something really strange for an extreme Metal band). But the quintet Existential Emptiness, from Chile, did such thing on "Nevereinding Pain - Everlasting Sorrow", their first album.
Their music can be described as a mix between Old School Death Metal with Doom Death Metal and Black Metal influences. But using only one song to fill an entire album needs not only courage. It demands a wise and good technical work, allowing the band to not bore the listeners. And these five maniacs have such feature on their work, and the only song is filled with many rhythmic changes, but keeping things with energy. Their musical formula is already eroded by time, but they deal with such problem with personality. Pedro Sazo (mixing, mastering) and Cultus (production, engineering) did a good work on on "Nevereinding Pain - Everlasting Sorrow", creating a raw and aggressive sonority for the album. Obviously that it has a 'hollow' feeling in some moments due the Old School insight used by the band, but it's not a waste. It means, in reality, that their music deserves more.
For such boldness to record a 31 minutes song on a first album could be something to make their musical career short. But as written above, the quintet has courage, and on "Underneath Tomb" shows a musical potential to create fine musical arrangements, tempo changes, vocals using contrasts between grunts and harsh high-pitched screams, with nasty guitars and solid bass guitar and drums playing. Everything works as an oiled machine, but they can do better than this first release shows. "Nevereinding Pain - Everlasting Sorrow" is a very good first coming, indeed. And EXISTENTIAL EMPTINESS deserves the attention of every fan of extreme Metal, for they have too much to offer. But in a next release, more songs would be welcome.
