In Your Blood (Reissue)

Originally released in 1995, forming part of the Straight-Edge Movement's heritage, and lovingly re-mastered by Justin Sitner of UNRESTRAINED/STUCK IN THE PAST, "In Your Blood" gives you 90's hardcore in the teeth. "Those Who Were" shows straight off Justin's aggressive drum style with a real latin feel for the beat that grooves well with the riffs. The bass tone offers some sexy filth when the instruments drop out and crash back in for the moshing section (it's all mosh worthy, but there's a difference between a broken nose and shattered ribs) as the atonal vocals create an aggressive climax. I think Ian Mackaye would be proud of track 2, "Distress", as it's dark, violent, foreboding and is some crazed roller coaster of preaching the vegan life style. The Lyrics are excellent; "I'm breaking the chain and I can hear the bones breaking" is metaphorical but also quite representative of the mosh pits that would of taken place during the song; a true Straight-Edged Anthem. "From Within" is one of the shortest songs on the album, but packs a serious punch with Death Metal guitar tones and some thrashy riffs to supplement the Hard-Core style which follows into "Backtrack" with the most brutal breakdown of the album.
The first track of side two opens in a sedated manner before opening up into a solid chug, "Vengeance" proudly sounds the individualist war horn, "Never will I follow blindly" being the message with some SABBATH influences on display make a well-rounded track. "Misfortune" places a lot of attention on personal strength and enforces self-reflection onto the listener, however you can't be blamed for missing the message when that riff kicks in half way through. I can't get enough of that groove driven drumming underneath it either, it's just got some heavy swing. The final two tracks offer the deepest fare on the album; "Judgement" passes what it says in the title on the fractured and dead comradery of a scene that was falling apart at the time. Of interest musically in the somehow uplifting melancholy of the guitar leads, all silver lining in the darkness. "In Your Blood" is the shortest title track I've ever heard and placed at the end for added poignancy. It has the most obtuse lyrics, but likely the most rewarding to decode and successfully leaves you shattered. The album feels like the run time is actually double due to the emotion on display, it's not something you listen to feel lifted, but music you listen to push yourself.
As a note on the re-mastering, after listening to both the original (via youtube, sorry) and the 2015 re-issue, I can say it's a lot clearer on the low end, and the vocals don't get watered down amongst the instruments too much. It's still rough and ready but more approachable.<
