Excarnated Entity - Mass Grave Horizon album cover

In mid-2020, EXCARNATED ENTITY relocated to Portland, Oregon and underwent a handful of lineup changes before reaching their current formation. With the new lineup in place, work on their debut album was finally completed. "Mass Grave Horizon" paints a hopeless vision of the future, drearily dredging death metal's darkest depths and locating majestically miserable doom among those ominously bubbling landscapes. The album has eight songs.

"Abjection" is first. It's lumbering, and depressing, and repeated leads carry the sound. It segues into "Carcinogen Shroud." The guttural vocal are horrid here, and the music is an equal dose of Death and Doom Metal. There is a slow down after the half-way mark, and the sound stings like salt in a wound. "Irradiated Shadows" is a bit faster and some of the amateur qualities of the band come through, in terms of some minor phasing issues. "Corridor of Flame" is a slower grind, with some eerie leads. Through four songs so far, all that the band have really established is that they are going to shovel this sound forward, and there isn't much diversity.

"Paralytic Reverie" is a shorter song with some mediocre musicianship, especially in the leads. I don't mean to insult the band but this album is pretty amateur so far. "Mass Grave Horizon" has a similar sound although the pacing is quicker. There really just isn't much in the way of inventive music on the album. "The Butcher's Pulpit" is a very slow grind that just comes off as uninteresting to me. "Gallery of Defeat" closes the album, and there is no need for this song to be eight minutes long. All it does is drag out the mediocre sound longer and longer. Overall, this is an album you can safely skip. It doesn't really offer anything to either the Death or the Doom Metal genres.
