Evoked - Ravenous Compulsion album cover

Gritty, fast and mean, the debut full-length from Germany's EVOKED, "Ravenous Compulsion," will rip through your chest with its aggressive riffs and cavernous vocals. Taking a similar route to bands like AUTOPSY mixed with MORBID ANGEL, this record will have you stomping in doom one moment and staring into space the next.

"Resurrect the Source" kicks the album off in a very intriguing way. With riffs that are a little bit beyond what an old school Death Metal revival album would have and an intense atmospheric section halfway through, this song is a great way to start an album. The atmosphere is something scarcely revisited throughout the course of the album, but when it is, it is welcome.

The atmosphere returns with the title track, my personal highlight of the album. The song delves deep into various segments all of which have a different sound. The track covers atmosphere, groove and crazy riffing segments in its runtime. It is followed by "Into Obliteration," one of the singles released to promote the album. This track is profoundly good with riffs upon riffs of pure savagery. There are no bells and whistles to this one; it's pure terror.

The album winds down with "Putrid Faith," a testament to how heavy the band can get. While not their best track, this closer is definitely in the right spot on the album, providing a slow, heavy halt to this fast piece of Death Metal. This being said, the album is structured quite well with a good opener and a fitting closer. The tracks in between all having some sort of identity that keep the album interesting.

Songwriting is another strong suit for Evoked. Each track has multiple riffing sections and even atmospheric parts, all of which are strung together creatively. It makes for a fun listening experience, and it means that the listener won't become bored.

Overall, this record is definitely one to keep an eye out for. With interesting riffs and inspired songwriting, it really can't go wrong. Evoked created a good debut for themselves, and this will be a great foundation on which to build a discography.
