Finnish Metal band EVENT RELENTLESS have released their third EP, self-titled,  a short burst of Melodic Death Metal mixed with Hard Rock but one that definitely showcases a band with talent but unsure what to do with it.   The opening track, "Shadows," is a bit of a mixed bag for me.  Instrumentally, the music is a solid Melodic Death romp but then the filtered cleans click in and things become a bit bland.  Juho has a fine clean tone but the presentation is just so uneven.  Does this band want to play Metal or do they want to sound like a heavier version of SEETHER?  His cleans are just a bit too safe and contrite for my tastes.  It doesn't help that the music often times becomes equally bland during the more clean and "safe moments."

The second track, "Nordic Moments," is indeed, as the title would have you imagining, a blast of frozen Finnish Melodic Death Metal.  The riffs are catchy with a good sense of how to mix melody with heaviness. Juho's Death vocals are pretty decent and it makes me wish he did them a lot more; it just fits them more it seems. "Nameless," is similar style track that contains all the hallmarks of a solid Metal tune.  It grinds away pretty quickly and is just heavy enough to give the band a much needed bite.    I really liked the music from the 53 second mark to the 1:26 mark; parts like this really make it seem like this is more of their sound that works for them compared to the first and last tracks.

Speaking of the last track, "Hey Girl," is really out of place.  Considering there is only four tracks here, I'm not sure writing a semi acoustic ballad that could be heard on any early 90's TV drama was the best decision. I really wanted to like this EP more but the uneven tracks and often times middle of the road sound really bogged it down.  Then again, it is hard to judge a band on just four tracks so maybe a full length in the future can show us what they really can do.
