"Labyrinth of Reason" is the title of the debut album of ETERNUS, a Symphonic Power Metal act from Chile, released independently on February 2nd 2014. The album is a super massive piece of music running over one hour and twenty eight minutes, consisting of fifteen tracks. This record is epic by all means, besides being exceedingly long; it typically features every quintessential Epic Power Metal element.
This album brings nothing new to the subgenre actually, all that's there is your typical velocity, rich melodies and an extremely heavy use of keyboards and "synthetic" orchestration. Every song has an equally-typical anthem driven feeling to it; however this album is not short of softer ballads like "Rebirth".
What really surprised me though were the vocals. Omar Tabilo's vocal performance is nothing like what you normally would hear on a Power Metal record. His voice is a deep operatic Baritone, rich and loaded with gravitas. It might sound a little out of place, yet I'd still say it's probably the best feat in ETERNUS' music.
Although this album is probably just another one among your run-of-the-mill Symphonic Power Metal releases, the vocals did quite add to its originality. Being extremely lengthy, listening to "Labyrinth of Reason" can be a really tiresome chore if you don't really dig this style. Otherwise, it's quite enjoyable for Power Metallers, so to speak.
