Eternal Rot - Moribound album cover

ETERNAL ROT is a (very) extreme metal band of international origins, with members from England, UK, and Poland. 'Moribound,' is their third full length album; they have also released a demo and a split. 'Moribound' is not only one of the heaviest and most uncompromising albums I've heard this year but definitely the nastiest, most sickening one. The guitar tone is unreal. It has obvious OSDM influences but the buzzsaw riffs are more like jack hammer riffs. The guitars/bass are just oppressively heavy. However, with that being said, they aren't one dimensional and can go from from crush, to groove back to doom again then all the way around to a classic metal feel. There are even some synth textures here and there.

For a band this extreme to be able to also be dynamic, says a lot about the songwriting prowess of the band. I love that there aren't any intros, interludes, outros or any fluff. This is six cadaver slabs of unabashed death/doom. And the vocals? Jeebus hoobastank christ on a stick. Kind of hard to explain but...imagine if you were shitting your pants and the same you are gurgling vomit...while someone ties a bag around your head. I mean, that sounds insane but it is a huge compliment. I can't imagine the vocals for this band coming off as anything other than 'gurgling chunks.' It works and it works well.

While the vocals may be over the top (in a good way of course), the music isn't extreme for the hell of it-it is too smart of an album for that but it definitely embraces it. 'Summoned from Moribund Delusions' opens the album with drums that feel hard rock oriented before the guitars and vocals roll over it. The drums hit hard, each hit on the kit accents the music. The sound settles on a mid paced groove but it is the later half with the almost stoner doom riffs that impresses the most.  Rhythmic, choppy riffs close out the song as death growls seep between the cracks. The ending growls are MASSIVE.

'Swollen Corpse Adoration," opening moments are highlighted by a short but smoking guitar solo. The groove in the song's first half is infectious as a zombie bite. The middle movement rains down pound after pound of musical blows. This song is full of riffs and drum patterns that aren't typical of a band this extreme but ETERNAL ROT pulls it off exceptionally well. 'Lurker in the Morgue,' would be the soundtrack to dead bodies returning for revenge to ravage and eat. The song has an apocalyptic atmosphere to it. The groove gets low and dirty too. At times the riffs remind of the last couple BOLT THROWER albums-catchy to the point of head banging but heavy enough for neck breaking. ETERNAL ROT's 'Moribound,' is a Crypt shattering album with enough dimensions to its extremity to give it a long, lasting appeal.
