ETERNAL IDOL, formed from the demise of Metal act HOLLOW HAZE, was formed in Vicenza, Italy in the early part of 2016. Giorgia and his daughter, Camillo Colleluori, as well as Nick Savio, were a part of HOLLOW HAZE before they left to join Fabio Lione on his latest venture. In fact, Fabio Lione was also a part of HOLLOW HAZE before Giorgia Colleluori replaced him in the band. The idea for the name of the new band came from the entirely forgettable 13th studio album of Heavy Metal gods BLACK SABBATH. The band claims that the sound they play is a interesting mix of Classic, Progressive and Symphonic Metal. While most of the lyrics and melodies were written by Fabio Lione, Nick Savio took over the songwriting and the arrangement of the tracks as well as produced the album. The band is quick to point out that the band is far from a side project and have started working on a follow up album.
"Evil Tears", the first track of the album is a brisk track with a peppy tempo. The chorus left a little to be desired and the track is more of the Power Metal variety than symphonic although the track employs considerable use of violins. Which continues into "Another Night Comes" which uses male vocals as a compliment to the female lead vocals. The track boasts of a extremely heavy chugging riff that I quite enjoyed. During the male vocals, the melody slows down that left me a little confused." Blinded " starts off again with a violin backed riff that adds a bit of atmosphere to the track. " Sad Words Unveiled" is another regulation Power Metal track with profuse use of backing vocals. The track more or less follows the same pattern as its predecessors and has nothing unique about it." Desidia" starts off interestingly enough and is almost a conversation between the male and female lead vocals. The track slows down considerably in the latter half with the melody strengthened by mournful violins and organ before the melody kicks up again. The album closes out with " Beyond", a 5 minute track that starts out with a heavy riff and lead female vocals and I got the feeling the female vocalist is a straight up Heavy Metal singer and is ever so slightly out of her zone.
Much like other Symphonic Metal bands, I felt the music was quite generic in nature and does not offer anything unique to the listener. I am sure that there are fans of HOLLOW HAZE and they follow the exploits of their idols with great interest. It is in fact for these fans that this album will appeal the most. The interesting thing to note is in most Symphonic bands, the male vocals are reduced to the chorus or have a couple of lines to sing at most. This band uses the male vocals extensively, which was new to me. The band does put out a competent album that will undoubtedly thrill fans of this genre but in terms of creating something unique is where they don't really pique enough interest. This is the debut effort of a bunch of seasoned and talented musicians and I am sure they will find their groove and delight fans in their future endeavors.<
