Imprisoned Souls

Eternal Drak

All ok but the singing.
August 28, 2024

A duo from Canada with a drummer and a guitar player, singer, and everything else kind of guy, are the pillars of the band ETERNAL DRAK that are releasing their next album called Imprisoned Souls promising some good quality KREATOR style music. The band was originally born in Bogota Colombia and now they reside in Canada like a good Latin American immigrant should. After listening to the 2 first tracks “Soul Of Hate” and “Circle Of Black Flames” I have noticed some similarities with KREATOR especially in the vocals. However, the band falls a little short in the arrangements and composition as it tends to get a little boring. A not much better output would be the next tune “She Is A Magnet”. I have to confess that bands that lack a minimum of vocal melody despite the aggressive way of singing, does not captivates me much. Having good instrumental parts and a poor vocal output that consists of only angry chants that sound the same to my ears in every song, does not show what could be accomplished in the style proposed.

Bands like SEPULTURA that have an undoubtful aggressive vocals, also have melodies that you can relate better. Just start singing Refuse, Resist  from SEPULTURA and the melody is there for you to remember. Unfortunately this is not the case with this album as you can also see on “Haunting Place”. Great guitar and drum work but monotonic vocal parts. Another band that is a favorite of many but not much of mine is VENOM. The vocals on this album remind me of Cronos in the sense that is the Devil singing but he does not have many melodies to offer. He is just cursing you. We reach Black Metal territory with “Oda A La Luna” (Ode to the moon) that in its structure, is the best of the album so far. With a lot of different riffs and moods, it has something else to say. However the vocals are still the same and do not add anything to the good musicianship despite a small melodic part in the middle. The drummer is Francisco Avella and the duo will not have issues in this department as Francisco knows all the shops for extreme music as you can see on all tracks including “Take No Prisoners” with a very fast double bass drum. Is he using a trigger or not?

The guitar work from Andres Martinez is also solid despite the vocals not to my liking. You will also notice the lack of a bass player in basically all the tracks. Some tracks you can try to guess that the bass is following the guitars at all times, but really, I believe this is not the case. Please try to find a bass sound in the track “The Woman In Sandals” or in “The Mist”. This last one has a nice and fast Thrash Metal riff but it sounds naked without the bass. It has less bass than And Justice For All from METALLICA. There are not many guitar solos in this album as well. I believe these 2 things, a present bass and histrionic guitar solos should always be part of the style of music they are proposing. We reach “Feasting The Anguish” and this one sounds a little better to my ears regarding the vocal melody as it has some more interesting parts and melodic changes. Nothing to surprise you, but a little better. We end this journey with “Bound By Ambition” that is the tune that has the most traditional Heavy Metal style riffs of the album and it could be filled with a better vocal melody. I think that resumes my evaluation of this album. Good Trash, Death, Heavy riffs but with the blatant miss of a good bass player and perhaps a good singer to add some more interesting vocal lines instead of listening the Devil chants to you the entire album.
