Equivocator
Equivocator
From Bandcamp, "EQUIVOCATOR explores some of the more abrasive realms: angular and dissonant, blasting, and breaking. Predominantly an aggressive venture, the project finds occasional footing on melodic ground, with a rare but welcome harmonic layer. It may sometimes feel like familiar territory, but EQUIVOCATOR is not so straightforward." The album has three songs.
"The Angle" is first. It is an intriguing combination of Hardcore, Thrash, Death and even some Progressive Metal thrown in. Some of the chord progressions do to odd places, and there are mostly harsh vocals and anger, but also some cleans. The clean guitar tones at the end also show another side of the band. "Axiomatic" also has a hardened structure, with some nifty bass work. The cleans in the chorus are juxtapositioned against the harsh vocals like two bullies squaring up with fists. So far, the one constant in the music is the Extreme edge to it. It is like an unrelenting army of fire ants attacking you.
"A Know Vulnerability" closes the three-song EP. This song has a little more melody, and even some vocal harmonies. The backbone is still very strong, but it breathes a bit. The instrumental section shows a band that is not willing to follow conventional structures...it is experimental, and pleasing. Overall, although three songs is mostly just a tease, I like the unusual nature of the music. Metalheads will surely like the callous architecture of the music, but those with a bit more of a wandering mind will find solace in some of the melodies and atypical chord progressions.
