Equilibrium - Renegades album cover

Bavaria is world-renowned for many things. Great beer, impressive beards, Bayern Munich and great Heavy Metal. EQUILIBRIUM, having been around since 2001, has turned out its unique brand of heavy metal that defies modern conventions of what Heavy Metal should be. They sound like themselves, and while the performances on this album are top-notch, there are also a few moments where they look at you with a wink and a grin. This is my first time listening to EQUILIBRIUM, and I have to admit that I was overall impressed. I would describe them as the counterbalance to RAMMSTEIN. Whereas the Berliners or out to make a serious statement about politics, religion, and the like, their southeastern compatriots in EQUILIBRIUM quick to point out the tragic comedy that those subjects are throughout history.

"Renegades" also showcases two new members to the lineup with this album, with Skar complimenting Robse on clean vocals (and Skar's screams serve as an amazing counterpart, as well) and Skadi providing synths to each track that adds subtle textures of character to each song. His synth playing is perfect; it's not in your face but it's easy to pick out as you listen to each song. Initially, I had an issue with Robse's vocals. Not that I think they are terrible or anything like that, but I was having a hard time hearing what he was adding to each song. Now before everyone jumps on the bandwagon of, "THE MIX SUCKS!!!", here is a test that I discovered a while back to show the proof of whether or not the mix was done well.

Listen to each song through multiple types of speakers. The test for me is iPhone earbuds first (let's be honest and say that's how most people are going to listen to it first). Next I listen to things on a quality set of over-the-ear headphones, and lastly, I listen to it through my car's stereo system. What I discovered was that Robse's vocals are naturally at a lower range, and what happens is that his vocals get crowded out by the guitars and synths. Having had studio experience as a musician myself, I've learned that it takes a lot of work for the engineer to enhance the performance of each musician without it sounding too polished. Sometimes, it's best just to let the performance stand on its own. I quickly got used to the vocals and it doesn't detract or take away from the overall experience with the album.

My favorite track is "Himmel Und Feuer", mainly because that melody is so catchy that I can't get it out of my head. Even though it's sung in German, you can't help but join along as best as you can. The guest spots on the album here fit well enough, but none of them seemed outstanding or special to me. Not that the artists did poorly; they just didn't capture my attention enough. In summary, EQUILIBRIUM is an act I'd hear of but never listened to simply I hadn't had the chance. But now, I'm glad they're on my radar. It's fun music to listen to, and I find it refreshing that they keep it fun. And yes, as always, BUY THIS ALBUM!!!
