Engulfed - Vengeance Of The Fallen album cover

The three piece from some kind of hell, ENGULFED, is just that: a musical coalition swathed in the eerie embrace of aggression and disdain. "Vengeance Of The Fallen" is the newest EP from the band filling in the space from their 2017 release and alluding to something far more grand; the 4 track manages a full 25 minutes making it longer than some Speed Metal albums.

The EP commences with the longest track, "Rites Of Abandoned Heretics," which manages just over 8 minutes in a fully fledged opus with full theme, progression, and dynamic changes; the repetition of the line, "Rites of abandoned heretics," is used throughout the track as a sort of motif, given strength by its usage in varying instances. "Summoning The Black Death" commences with a guttural bout that then descends into a visceral cacophony of torrential sound; the solo is made intentionally jarring as it is performed in such a fashion as to immediately wrest the listener's attention with its slow and swinging melody. "Cycle Of Black Altar" opens with a masterful introduction which sets in mind the mood and atmosphere of the track before immediately cutting to the verse. The final track, "Scorched," follows much in the vein of its predecessors with aggressive riffs and heavy progressions.

The fidelity of the instruments is quite superb in an overall view, the guitars themselves are noticeably fronted and evenly balanced within each channel, having an almost live quality to them that they sound as if they're being performed with the listener in the same room; the drums are exceptionally well performed but tend to sink into the mix especially the snare which is quite unfortunate; the bass is an impulse found throughout every track, giving substance and force to every song; and lastly the vocals are a creature of their own species having a deep and almost demonic quality and tone to them.

Overall the 4 track is quite alarming in how well put together it is combining the best elements of the bands performance with their songwriting prowess. The brutal and damning subject matter is fitting as it epitomizes some of the darker elements of Death Metal, and pairs perfectly with the brutal and aggressive delivery of the music backing it.
