People often don't have the clear idea why Black Metal had such crude approach on sonority on the past. It was not intentional, because it comes from musical influences (remembering that MOTÖRHEAD is the all-father of extreme Metal genres), and from recording conditions the bands had. It's obvious that some improvements were done during the rise of the SWOBM bands, but the early facts told above gave birth to musical models. And that old ways can be heard on many musical works today, as from the Norwegian band ENEVELDE, as its first release "Enevelde" shows.

This one man band shows a darkened and crude form of Black Metal that reminds a lot the ways used by the SWOBM bands, especially those set by Norwegian bands as MAYHEM, DARKTHRONE and BURZUM, the pillars of Norwegian Black Metal musical core. But the band has a musical personality, abusing of weight and aggressiveness, but with the main focus being on dark ambiances and slow tempos (besides there are moments with Black Metal's traditional fast focus), and the vocals don't use the traditional shrieked tunes, but an aggressive low tuned screams. And the technical work is not abusively overloaded, but works in a way that makes the songs be expressed in a spontaneous way. It's truly very good release, indeed.

As said above, it's a work similar to SWOBM ways, so the sonority bears the same crude and morbid approach. But the death's stench that the album bears is coming from the instrumental tunes used, because the things can be easily understood. Yes, it's oppressive and morbid, but in a way that can be understood by everyone.

All that is left to say is that "Enevelde" is a very good travel to the past. "Kroppens Mani" has that essential aggressiveness mixed with slow impacting tempos, and "Forringelse" follows the same way (but with even darkened guitar riffs). The nasty and eerie funereal feeling that flows from "Irrgangen", even with these fast parts, is really charming. And "Daukjøttet" comes with the same speed and aggressive approach, using a solid and weighty rhythmic work tempered with somber melodies from guitars. To deal with an album that has only four longs songs isn't so easy, but it's not so hard to assimilate.

"Enevelde" is a very good release, with a darkened charming appeal that allows ENEVELDE to climb to a higher level soon.
