End My Sorrow - Of Ghostly Echoes album cover

END MY SORROW seems to occupy a slightly unique space within Metal music. Their melodiousness is far greater than many - with the female lead and the growling vocals to add some heaviness - and somehow they are reminiscent of some of Symphonic Metal acts, but without the occasionally dodgy synth sounds.

What makes the group's latest album "Of Ghostly Echoes" really work is the contrast between the really melodic parts and the heavy, doomy, growling ones. There are also plenty of intricate instrumental sections that flow through the music, which are technically interesting and complex, and the Doom influences often come through with plenty of atmosphere throughout the 11 tracks that make up the album. "Because of You" really shows this off by focusing on a more melodic side, and the mix of heaviness and acoustic guitars that swap over multiple times really makes the emotional depth that the band seems to revel in stand out. The way that the two vocal styles are used is a lot more interesting than the standard 'clean verse/growled chorus' model used by other bands. END MY SORROW have the two going on at the same time, mixing darkness and light to create a flowing, almost conversational style between the two; especially when the music underneath either does not change to match the singing, or opposes what one would think. The blast beats and rapid riffing of "War of the Blind" under the female vocals, followed by more extended instrumental sections really goes to show a real storytelling aspect to the sound that END OF SORROW is going for on this album.

Occasionally, the way that the different sections leap between different feels does jar a little bit- with a lot of very sudden pace and gear changes within each song; which can upset the flow, especially of the longer tracks.

Overall this is a well crafted album, with plenty to keep the listener interested, along with lots of head banging riffs, fantastic vocals and really well written songs.
