Martial Law
Emergency

EMERGENCY is a dutch band formed in 1985 that plays hard rock, and decided to keep their style and sound from the founding year. As the album started, I remembered my childhood and the music from back then. It literally feels like the years did not pass over these guys. Everything, from the sound of the guitars to the vocal sounds like it was recorded 30 years ago. Depending on tastes that can be a good or a bad thing. But I'll leave that for you to decide.
The album itself starts with "Hiding In The Shadows", three and a half minutes of the same phrase sang over and over with the same few riffs... not a good start in my books, to be honest. "All Running Wild" managed to fix things a bit, having a wee bit more complexity, but not by much, unfortunately. As it seems, the album itself was designed to be catchy and enjoyable, yet at a simplicity that is uncharacteristic to rock and metal. The band is supposedly similar to BON JOVI and the sorts, but the later mentioned had a far deeper depth and complexity both instrumentally and lyrics wise. Quite disappointing.
First song that actually caught my attention was "Across the desert sands"; it has something a bit less boring to it, and a much catchier sound overall. The guitars sounded great, albeit simple, and coexisted gracefully with the drums and the bass in the background, while the vocal had only a few repetitive parts included for him; overall, a very enjoyable song, and the first that I'd recommend. It is followed by the most 80's rock song definition. "Running out of miracles" has all the points of an 80's rock song, from the happy, repetitive drums to the name and the "empowering" lyrics. I think I'm either a bit too old or a bit too young, but listening to this style of music does not bode well with the present ...me.
The album ends with "Dangerous" which I imagine being used in a 80s action movie as a trailer/intro: a badass looking cop or something like that in a muscle car and this song blasting from the speakers. EMERGENCY themselves sound good, especially for the fans of the genre, and "Martial Law" has the sound and the potential to be great for old timers that still enjoy this. Unfortunately, I am not one of them.
