Eden's Curse

EDEN'S CURSE is a band with members from four different countries and two continents. It's not often I don't get to mention where a band is from. Obviously in this case, I cannot. The album is based almost entirely on Judaism and not in a mocking fashion either. It is a breath of fresh air to me to hear that and the Christian religion or any other religion for that matter, not bashed for a change. It may very well be multiple religions. Angels are not exclusive to Christianity. The band has a lot of support from metal artists of all types, singers, producers, and keyboardist. It is nice to have connections. The music is very melodic. Melody is the key here. Everything has to sound like a classic composition. It is classically oriented music played by modern metal instruments. Many bands do this, but I can hear at least half of these songs working as music played by an orchestra. The speed of the songs is well varied. You get some double bass thumping but the accompanying snare is sometimes too slow. I would prefer an all out assault, but that is not their forte. They do a cover of the late Ronnie James Dio, and I wish they had not done so. It's too weak sounding to me. How many people can pull off a proper DIO cover? I have only heard a few, and I have heard a great deal of them.
The overall tone to the album is a very polished type metal with many classical elements and keyboards aplenty. Also, as already mentioned, a lot of religion is used thematically. With a name like EDEN'S CURSE you might expect religion to be used, but it's worth nothing, the founding member of the band's name is Michael Eden, A coincidence? I have no idea. Either way, it's doesn't work to their disadvantage. Some of the music sounds recycled to me. I won't delve into what songs I think it is, because I want to avoid accusations, but I am sure some of you will notice it too. The singing is a mixed bag. The lead vocalist isn't bad, but he needs to realize that being the founding member of the band doesn't necessarily mean you are fit to be the main vocalist. The melodic metal scene is too crowded for a vocalist that is anything short of great nowadays. The guitarist, Thorsten Koehne, is absolutely stellar! He is the highlight of the album for me. They got that part right. He handles all of the guitar duties. I am not sure how a band like this would sound live with only one guitarist.
Overall, this is not a bad album at all. The guitar work may be worth the price of the CD alone. It truly is sensational. They keyboard player has a very accomplished pedigree. All you have to do is go their page to see all the great artists he's played with. With him being in so many different bands, it's hard to see him staying put here. I hope the lineup stays steady though. I always wish bands of this genre nothing but the best. Myspace pages were made for bands like these. If you can't decide whether or not to buy it based on my less than enthusiastic review or the cover or whatever you gauge new music by, you can always check out that site. Most bands have a myspace page in this day and age. Guitar lovers might like this more than just a fan in the general sense of melodic metal would.
