I've never heard of "Grind n' Roll" before, which is what American band DRUGS OF FAITH claim to be. Their original plan was to be a punk band, but then found themselves branching out across genres, and found their style hard to place into a category. This certainly shows on their latest EP "Architectural Failures", which has the rage-fuelled shouts of punk, the machinegun drumming of Grindcore, and the distorted guitars of Metalcore.
The EP kicks off with ferocious drumming by Edward S., which is soon accompanied by Richard J.'s screeching, distorted guitar glory. "The Incumbent" also showcases Richard J's impressive vocal abilities: he shouts and screams in a way that is somehow perfect for punk, Grindcore and Hard Rock, all at once. Track number 2 is aptly named - "Insanity". It features some awesome guitar work, ranging from distortion to screeching solos, and the bass and drums keep the rhythm set to hectic. "Paper Trails" opens with some very funky bass by Taryn Wilkinson, and before long the guitars, drums and vocals join the party. The song features several elements which all occur at once, creating a sense of chaotic frenzy. Even some acoustic guitar makes an appearance, proving yet again that this band isn't afraid to push boundaries. Last up is "Placing Bets", bringing the EP to a close with erratic drumming, malevolent vocals and guitar work that will get you headbanging.
An impressive EP by an impressive band, "Architectural Failures" by DRUGS OF FAITH is quite hard to describe. It crosses genres in such a way that you'll either love it, or hate it, depending on how broad your musical taste stretches.
