Drudkh - Eastern Frontier In Flames album cover

The Ukrainian DRUDKH have been very prolific since their inception back in 2002, releasing a total of 9 full lengths, 2 EPs and 1 split. One hell of a work for only a dozen years. "Eastern Frontier In Flames" while a full length is actually a compilation album consisting of songs the band recorded for their split with WINTERFYLLETH and their own EPs Anti Urban and Slavonic Chronicles.

And this is a fascinating release, while I didn't like the monotonous instrumental opener "Fallen into Oblivion" it did manage to mellow me down to the point of being caught off guard by the fantastic Blackish assault of "Ashes" a heavy track utilizing seemingly low production values but managing to execute it perfectly and reminding me of the early Black Metal bands of my youth, and while I'm usually against a bad production, this isn't bad production, it's simply low tech, and manages to recreate the sound well, while remaining pleasant to the ear. "Tam gdzie gaśnie dzień..." Is an excellent example of Folk laden heaviness, the song is extremely long, in fact at over 10 minutes, it's the longest on the album, but it never gets boring featuring a uniting theme throughout, as well as some Slavic instrumentation.

The album is a bit of mishmash, and doesn't flow as well as the bands albums usually do, but that's understandable due to this being a compilation of 3 different recordings as well as being comprised mostly of covers (with DRUDKH adding their own twist to them).

This is a very interesting and recommended recording, especially to newer fans of the band since the EPs featured are now out of print; this is a good chance for fans to get hold of the recordings.
