DREAMS OF THE DROWNED is a one-man Avante-garde/Black Metal project which began in 2007. To date there are no other releases under this artist's name. However, Camille has been involved in several others metal projects over the years and is a seasoned musician.
Track one, "Dream I" starts out with an ethereal tone which establishes a very dark atmosphere. It's devoid of any warmth whatsoever, making you feel as if you've wandered into an alien world where humans aren't welcome. It's eerie yet alluring all at once. "Conciliabules," by contrast, is louder with a down-tuned, guitar-laden intro that has a very strong Grunge vibe to it. I am reminded a great deal of early ALICE IN CHAINS songs while I listen to it because it possesses the same haunting feel to it that their work did. It's a mesmerizing track that is definitely worth listening to. The third track, "The Revolutionary Dead," is harsher and heavier, with a few melodic overtones added for good measure. There's a distinct sense discord within the song which is obviously intentional. It adds tension to the music in a most effective manner, preventing you from relaxing while the song plays. The sensation is so odd that you find yourself unable to stop listening. It's not a song for all Metal fans, but those who don't mind experimental music will appreciate it.
"Real And Sound" is a surprise after the previous three songs. It is heavy, sounding more like an Alternative Metal composition. This one just rocks; no better way to put, it really does. It would be a great addition to your summertime road-tripping soundtrack with it's strong beat, intense guitar riffs and hypnotic vocals. Both "Vieilles Pierres" and "Crawl Of The Concretes" are extremely experimental in nature. Again, it's a case of these tracks will either appeal to those who are willing to check out something a bit different, or they will leave people cold if that's not their taste in music. My suggestion would be to give them a try at least once. I never considered myself a fan of experimental music, but it has grown on me as I've become accustomed to its unique sound and style. "Danced" is very intense at the beginning, with a chaotic, distorted blend of sounds as its base. Combined with vocals that sound disembodied the result is confusing. I honestly cannot decide if I like the track or not. It annoys me on one level, yet grabs my attention on another. At nine minutes long it could pose a challenge for those who aren't used to investing so much time in a single song. "Midnattskogens Sorte Kjerne" is a cover of an song originally performed by DODSHEIMGARD. The remake is much more intense than the original with a heavier Industrial sub-influence to it. However, the vocal style is pretty close to the original so fans should still be pleased with the end result which still retains a strong Black Metal sound at its core. "Dream III" is a beautiful and haunting instrumental which is the perfect way to end this highly unusual yet excellent album.
