DOOMORTALIS' debut album is one of old school sensibilities that harkens back to the golden days of both Doom and Death Metal.  The guitar tone and overall atmosphere recalls the early days of bands like MY DYING BRIDE and MORBID ANGEL.  Production wise, it isn't super clear but it doesn't sound like a total shit either—if anything, the somewhat rough sound really gives the band a very primal and organic feel.   Unfortunately, it also makes the songs sound similar; I would definitely suggest listening to it a few tracks at a time.  However, none of the tracks are weak...this album has absolutely no filler.  Where some Doom metal bands add in other elements, such as clean vocals, clean guitars, keyboards, DOOMORTALIS play it more on the heavy side

The opening track, "Paradise Where Pain Reigns," is straight up Doom from the very beginning.  Crushing riffs, uniquely placed guitar solos, and a barrage of drums...it very much is a template on how to play Doom correctly.  The band's Death Metal elements really shine through here as the track is quite pummeling.  The "winding" riffs towards the end give everything a satisfying conclusion.Despite the name, "Portal To Gloominess," begins rather brutal instead and brings the Doom  around the 1:35 mark.  The darkly melodic riffs heighten the atmosphere and are a perfect preface to the guitar solo, which in turn slides effortlessly back to the sounds of Death.

Track seven shares the band's namesake and, as expected, it's one of the best songs on the album.  I really love the riffs, they are a big sludgy like CROWBAR or EYEHATEGOD.  The song is very well paced and I was consistently enjoying it and looking forward to what it was going to do next, which was getting heavier and heavier and throwing in a crazy guitar solo that really complimented the riffs. The final track "The Pleasures of Immuted Zombies," not only has one of the most ridiculous yet badass song titles ever,  is also one hell of a rager.  Isaias' evil growl rides high upon the riffs, creating a swirling sound of heaviness that doesn't let up. An absolutely crushing song. If you like your Doom heavy and your Death crushing, you will need to add this album to your collection.
