Domino Drive - Smoke and Mirrors album cover

From their EPK, "After being offered a record deal with the German label Pride & Joy Music, the band finished their work on their debut album, " Smoke And Mirrors" in June 2023. The album was produced and mixed by DOMINO DRIVE at Domino Studios, Uppsala, and mastered by Fredrik Folkare at Chrome Studios, Stockholm. The album features guest appearances by JJ Marsh, Fredrik Folkare, and Tina Gunnarson." The album has ten songs.

"Scarlet Queen" is first. Lush keyboards are featured in the opening, followed by a mid-tempo riff and some vocal harmonies. The song has a sad tone to it as well, but it is rich and full, and man does the lead guitarist know how to play! "Never Give Up" is another mid-tempo song with plenty of lamenting. The vocal harmonies in the chorus are strong, but the verses leave the listener wanting more. "Hollywood Nights" is the third mid-tempo song in a row, and anyone who knows me knows that I always say too many of these songs can really bog down an album and make it hard to get off the ground.

"Maria Dolorosa" is yet another, but the band manages to fill in the sound with heavy keys and a rocking riff. This song is much better done because it has big hooks. The title track is another song heavy in keyboards, and this critic loves a lush keyboard sound. It is definitely an instrument that can augment much, and even take the lead when it needs to. "Cul-De-Sac" is a bit slower, although the rich keyboard sound and vocal harmonies keep it from getting stuck in the mud too much. The keyboard solo is fantastic as well.

"The Jester King" is a soft, keyboard led song with more laments. Symphonic elements gather in the background, and the song is presented ominously. "Make Wave" closes the album...another mid-tempo offering. The sound is catchy, but as I mentioned before, too many of these songs with the same pacing can really weight an album down. That is my exact issue with the album as a whole. Many of the songs are catchy, but too many of them have the same pace. It bogs the album down, unfortunately.
