Love is Dead and We Killed Her
Doll Skin

This is the second album for the female band from Phoenix, Arizona, after the debut "Manic Pixie Dream Girl" in 2017. DOLL SKIN have been named a couple of times as one the best 10 female acts in Arizona, and I could only quote that. Despite most likely one of the worst album cover ever (if I would buy an album just because of the cover, for sure this would be the last in line), the songs work and, although if fades away in the second half, the album is enjoyable.
The formula proposed by the female quartet is mixture between hard and pop rock with many punk influences, sometimes pretty aggressive, especially in the opening "Don't Cross my Path" (which to be honest is not one of my favorite song in the album and is the only song with such aggressiveness, especially in the vocals). But one of the highlight is just around the corner: the title track conquers you with a catchy chorus, and a remarkable mid-tempo with a sudden acceleration at half track."Mark my words" is the first single taken from "Love is Dead and We Killed Her", a mid tempo that has a rousing chorus. "No fear" is together with title rack, one of my favourite, a song full of melody and more pop oriented, but still full of energy.
"Outta of my Mind" is a good song, but honestly, I do not like the cheerleader chorus. Things are again serious with the following "Ink Stains", a punk oriented song with a catchy chorus. In the second half, as said, the tension fades a little bit away, "Nasty Man" and "Your Idols are Dying" do not impress, "Empty House" tries to put everything on track, being only partially successful. "When they Show their Teeth" is an interesting digression in the direction of classic hard-rock, where the f**k you attitude is well exposed (and here the cheerleader chorus is working much better), before the ending "Homesick", which experiments a little bit more, with tempo changes and some melodic openings.
In conclusion, a good album till the middle section, a lot of energy, a lot of fun, and hooky chorus, which fades away in the second half. I am truly impressed of what the Phoenix combo (partially) delivered, and based on that, we can only say "We want more" (meaning we want that also the second half is at the same level). Half promoted - but please next time choose another cover.
