Stigma
Dodfodd
DODFODD is a Black Metal band born in Sweden. Formed in 2001, they release many Demos, with ten years passing between two of them. "Stigma" is actually the band's debut full length, and contains two very lengthy tracks. Dodfodd means "stillborn" in Swedish. They have no webpage or Facebook page, so let's get to the two tracks to find out what the band is all about.
"Stigma I" is twenty-two minutes in length. It opens with a harrowing presence, reverb and programming abound. Soon, a steady drumbeat develops and some spoken words come into play. Some varied voices come into the fold, some evil and frightening and others sound like tortured souls. It picks up a bit in pace around the halfway mark, but there isn't much else going on besides the drums and some hypnotic background programming. There is a long bit of feedback to the fadeout.
"Stigma II" is equally as long, and bizarre. As I mentioned before, there isn't much in the way of any real "music" here, it's just drumming along with long sequences of atmosphere, with an occasional voice. About a third of the way in, the drums drop, and it's feedback of varying doses that sounds like it is coming from the pit of Hell itself. The drums return along with this repetitive sound that waxes and wanes. The drums drop for a bit and then return, along with varied voices. There is another long fadeout at the end with feedback.
Other than both songs sounding similar, it was very difficult to rate this album, because it lacks the very thing that it is supposed to be...music. I suppose it could loosely be called music, because the eye is in the beholder as they say. But for me, it was nearly 45 minutes of little to nothing. Sure, the artist has created something fairly unique here, but it registered for me as barely above what I would call noise. Do yourself a favor and skip this one.
