Black Sun
Død Håp
From Bandcamp, "conquering new lands for their clan on the other side of the world, a horde of Viking warriors is ambushed and find their way to death, Valhalla awaits... or not... a big black sun welcomes the troop, entering into a barren land without the least sign of vegetation, just surrounded by heavy earthquakes, massive volcanic eruptions, sinkholes and an extremely dense, vicious and warm atmosphere..." The album has seven songs.
The title track is the first proper track, save for the brief warning tones in "Der Kommer!" (which means "the day will come"). It's a slow, heavy song with a deep well at the bottom end. The vocals vary from screams to gutturals, and the guitars create a frightening landscape. What kind of world have the Viking stumbled into? Although the vocals sound like Black Metal, the Post elements come from the barren landscape of the music. "The Welcome" is a little quicker and the darkness begins to spread, sending its feelers to every corner of the land. The vocals also grow more sinister.
"Hel" is another slow, grinding song with a heavy bottom end. I think it's the vocals that keep the album from growing as much as it could. They are just your average, run-of-the-mill Black Metal screams. Seven songs of that and you grow tired of them pretty quickly. "Tears of Dejection" begins with a quick pace that lessens back to the slow grind once again. Five tracks in, and many of the songs have the same pace and similar sound. This is not how one creates a memorable album. "Whispers of Eternal Ice" is another song that begins with promise, and then that promise fades when the slow pacing returns. Slow songs have their place in Metal, but you need to elongate certain things to get the point across.
"Dead Hope" closes the album. It closes the story well, but it's too little, too late for me. The story follows that dead Vikings feel very much out of place not going to Valhalla, but rather an inhospitable and tropical environment with a lot of natural disasters occurring. More than anything else, the warmth and humid atmosphere probably hurts them the most, as Vikings are born and bred in the cold. I feel similar about this album, sort of a fish out of water. Besides the very dark and harrowing elements, it doesn't have a lot going for it. This was just a plain old mediocre listening experience for this reviewer.
