Depth Of Perception

There are countless bands in Heavy Metal music that begin their musical life self-producing and self-releasing their first album with the best of hopes. They do that because they love Heavy Metal and that's what they always wanted to do, to play music. For some of them, their album is an example of great music crafting. One such example is DISTRIBUTOR.
DISTRIBUTOR is a melodic and progressive groove Metal act from Co.Wicklow, Ireland, as they describe themselves in their MySpace page. The band was founded by guitarist Ian Rockett and vocalist Peter Brook - Tyrell in 2003 and Depth Of Perception is their first full-length album. And what length it is, over an hour of great vocals, solid head pounding guitars and drums that could shatter a concrete wall.
DISTRIBUTOR's sound is definitely influenced by DREAM THEATER; you can hear sometimes within their sound motives of early DREAM THEATER. This is not bad, on the contrary, DISTRIBUTOR is an apt student of all the progressive bands and have taken that which really matters and molded it to their personal play style and music, instantly making it unique. And one unique aspect of the band is the perfect vocal game between Peter Brooke - Tyrrell and Caroline Flanahan. Both posses a great vocal range, that fits perfect with the music of the album, each voice supporting and complimenting each other. Once you begin listening to them, you discern a passion that builds up into a breathtaking performance.
Ian Rockett's riffs do not come out from his guitar but from his machine gun, the guitar melodies are perfect and heavy. Ian doesn't sacrifice heaviness for a more progressive sound, he doesn't need to, he is so good that he can give you the progressive sound you need without overreacting and hold you down with the monolithic heaviness of his guitar. And then come the drums, Ross McMahon is probably one of the best drummers Heavy Metal is about to discover; he doesn't lose a beat, he is everywhere and his sound is powerful and laser precision technical, he is aggressive were he must and calm when he must. The guitar and the drums sound like they are fighting over who is heavier and more technical, and the best part in all this is, you do not get tired listening to that fighting.
Keyboards bind everything together, subtly, elegantly, without much ado. It is really not necessary to do anything but that. Close to the end of the album they also take two minutes to prepare us for the end, a solace from all the power and the fury of the rest of the album. I know I get excited when I listen to bands like DISTRIBUTOR, but I can't help it, when someone puts such an effort to make something as good as Depth Of Perception, I do not care much if they will do something innovating that will change the landscape of Heavy Metal music.
DISTRIBUTOR plays good music, has produced an album that can work as an example and deserves to be known. Fans of progressive Metal, melodic Metal, riffs that boil your blood fans and generally Heavy Metal fans, should show DISTRIBUTOR their support.
