Displeased Disfigurement - Origin Of Abhorrence album cover

Brutal Death Metal - or let's say Slam in general - is far from a new thing. Yet be that as it may, I've got to give a shout-out to the South Africa (Middelburg) based group DISPLEASED DISFIGUREMENT.

They band has been in existence for sixteen years and yet their debut album only saw the light of day around 2013. No idea why though. The aforementioned debut consisted of ten songs in total - one cover and nine original songs - and was entitled "Extermination Process". Now, four years later, the band teamed up with the highly underrated Canada-based label CDN Records to release their second full-length album, "Origin of Abhorrence". This album has nine tracks in total and it spins for almost 36 minutes. By the way, the band's awesome-looking logo was done by Benno Meijer.

This album starts off with an "Intro" (obviously). Don't expect much, it's just sounds of torture, splashy noises, and some demon talking. Ha! Not bad, being that most intros can be really boring. "Parasitic Devourment" is the second track. Classic screaming, lots of growls, a lot of slamming influences here; with the addition of some silent riffs, but I assume it's exactly what the band were aiming for - but I may be wrong.

Although I approached this band with some insecurity, I actually like their "raw" sound. It's slightly different from what most bands play today. It's kind of crispy and doesn't have too many effects. "Malignant Misery" is the next track. It starts off kind of like the first one, but the growls go a bit deeper this time, reminding you of the voice heard in the intro. Pretty creepy, but really cool, I guess.

Not a bad band, and they deserve a chance if you want some original Slam. Enjoy!
