Dismember - Dismember album cover

This band was part of the Swedish Death Metal movement that kicked in the Metal scene somewhere in 1988 with famous acts like AT THE GATES or ENTOMBED. DISMEMBER did not follow the evolution path of their homeland's Metal scene towards the so-called Melodic Death Metal genre, but remained loyal to their prime sound.
The album gets you by the throat with a song that bears the excellent title Death Conquers All; yeah, this is classic Death Metal with fast drumming, extremely distorted down tuned guitars and throat tormenting vocals. I really love the SLAYER-esque guitar solo that comes with the proper use of the tremolo (Kerry King rules!). The groovy neck snapping Europa Burns is next, bringing along some double drum pedaling and a bass guitar ton heavy sound that for some evil reason brings to my mind the works of MORBID ANGEL. The band sets foot on the Grind Core territory with the killer Under  A Bloodred Sky; here the twin guitars add some prime IRON MAIDEN finishing touches presenting some melodic riffs and leads. No mercy is shown during The Hills Have Eyes that storms the speakers with raw power and aggression and in Legion that will remind you of DEICIDE's sacrilegious sound. The guitar driven melodic intro of Tide Of Blood catches the listener off guard and continues with some violent Death Metal treats that will make your neck snap!
In every review I try to find the strong and weak sides of the album in order to be fair with my judgment and to present it to you in the best way. In this occasion, I could not find something negative or even weak to point out so excuse me if my review is too good but in mind this is the truth. The album is solid as hell with a ultra heavy sound and a Death Metal character that in some point has been forgotten with all these new music genres. Actually, there are a lot of things to enjoy and bang your head to; like the fast tracks Combat Fatigue and End It All, the leaden mid tempo No Honor In Death or the six and a half minutes of the diverse Black Inn that closes the album.
So, Death Metal IS here and DISMEMBER come to prove it with their newest treat. It's good to have bands like DISMEMBER that remind us of the roots of our favorite extreme music. This review will end with the following quote that I found in the band's official MySpace  page: As long as DISMEMBER  live, Death Metal will reign! Below you can watch the uncut version of the video clip Soon To Be Dead from the band's first album Like An Ever-Flowing Stream.
