Disbeliever - Archetype album cover

Where to start with this one. Well first of all DISBELIEVER is a "Gothic/Doom Metal" band from Pisa, Tuscany in Italy. Right off the bat this album did not leave a particularly good impression. The title track opens up with piano and drums, but thanks to the production the intro sounds really bad. It's hard to explain, but I think it mostly comes from poor mixing of the drum kit. The cymbals are super splashy (the rhythm itself is boring) and the kick drum sounds incredibly hollow, all while the EQ itself is very dry so you can hear every imperfection. The song gets better as it goes on, but it was not a good first impression for me. The rest of the album is actually decent, if a bit samey. I think this is one of those albums where if you enjoy the genre you'll likely enjoy this for what it is, but it's certainly not groundbreaking, nor is it likely to change your mind if you don't care for the genre. This is a classic example of how bad presentation can really hurt an otherwise passable album.

Songs like Mystic and Retreat into Madness were what I enjoyed the most, when they go for that epic doom style with solid hooks and great riffs. Unfortunately the album is not as consistent in that quality of songwriting, but there's definitely some gems on here. Screams wasn't one of my favorite songs, but the guest spot for Francesco Cavalieri is fun. Silent Death has some moments that caught my ear, but aside from the first two songs I pointed out it's mostly just moments of solid songwriting, hidden amidst a morass of rather generic Gothic/Doom Metal. Maybe it's my fault, maybe I just don't appreciate the genre enough, but I found myself tuning in and out of this album, it was hard to maintain my attention which underlies my main point. This album is okay, it's enjoyable to listen to and it has some decent hooks here and there, but the presentation is so... lackluster. Like there's not really anything extra added to spice things up, the mix is really bad and the production overall is just generic. You can have a generically good album that gets a pass because the presentation is good enough to hide some of the bigger flaws, but when the music is average and the production is flat, you're going to get a boring, generic album.
