Dirt - Rock N' Roll Accident album cover

DIRT are a relatively new band, with "Rock 'N' Roll Accident" only being their second album - their first, "Suicide Blues", was released in 2009. This time around, however, Sven Zaklikowski has decided that he can't go it alone as he did before, and recruited some musicians to aid him.

Simply put, this is a fine album. There's that 'traditional' Metal sound that I'm sure you'll all be familiar with, but DIRT have put their own spin on it. It's quality from start to finish, and really impressed me. It's lovely and heavy, but very melodic - it's defined as Southern Groove Metal, and to be fair that probably sums it up nicer than I could. As you might have realized from that genre, DIRT have a bit of a PANTERA vibe going on, it's very riff driven with lots of intensity. The album's not a full on assault however, as they show their quieter side with "One Step Away", which has an awesome solo. Otherwise though, this album is one to be played at full volume so as to enjoy it at its best.

Zaklikowski's vocals are really very good - pretty intense, but without being overwhelming. Hille and Stollberg's guitar work is slick - the riffs are big and delicious, and the melodies will be in your head for days. Rebmann's bass playing is very impressive, especially on "Never Change My Ways". The drumming from Unger is just what good drumming should be - frantic but controlled, and complements all the other instruments brilliantly. These five guys come together really well to make this album, and it's been mixed and produced wonderfully, it's tight and slick. I know it doesn't take much nowadays to produce an album that sounds like it's been recorded in a top notch studio, but you can really tell with "Rock 'N' Roll Accident" that time and effort has been put into it, and it's not just been thrown together. If you'll forgive my terrible humour, this album was definitely no accident.

If you're a fan of PANTERA, I reckon you'll dig this album. Even if you're not, but you're a fan of more 'traditional' sounding Metal, you should definitely give DIRT a chance. They've achieved a very high standard with this release, and if they continue with this quality of music, it'll be very interesting to see what they come up with next.
