Dipygus

A mix between Death Metal and Death/Black Metal is heard on this album.

To work in traditional subgenres of Metal demands a lot of the musicians, because in all of them to work with personality is hard. It means that to work on old fashioned genres is to be tied in features that are eroded, and to express personality on such case is extremely hard. But there are some acts that succeed in such trial as the sextet DIPYGUS as heard on their new full-length, “Dipygus”. The band joined forces with Matt Harvey and Alejandro Corredor on the recordings, Greg Wilkinson on the mixing and Dan Randall on the mastering. The result is simple and efficient: an impacting and violent sonority with Old School traces, but worked on a modern and defined way that allows the sextet to express its ideas in a good way. And the instrumental tunes used depict a link between the past and the present. And the cover created by Sick Slice is very good, fitting on Old School Death Metal models.

As the words above states, the sextet works on a mo0del of Old School Death Metal, using influences from North American Death Metal School. It’s massive and heavy, aggressive and has a good technical level (without being exaggerated), with many extreme hooks throughout all the songs. But they have a point: the whole outfit used brings some influences of Death/Black Metal into the account, and it’s not old fashioned. And it grants their music a fresh appeal. The best ones for a first ride: “Perverse Termination (Bulb of Force)” (with its nasty rhythms and massive weight created by bass guitar and drums parts), “AquaGenesis” (a climatic and disgusting song with many Death/Black Metal traces, and with good guitars’ arrangements), “Vipers at the Pony Keg” (this one uses very good slow parts, boosting the work of the vocals with contrasts between grunts and shrieks), “Огромный Кальмар (Ross Sea Trawler)” (again very good guitar riffs on the slower moments), and “Sacral Brain” (a long song filled with many rhythmic shifts and oppressive instrumental parts).

Obviously, “Dipygus” is a good album, but DIPYGUS can do better. It means that this sextet is able to unleash an apocalypse with their music in the near future.
