Relocated in the USA and now acting as a trio, the Mexican born members of DIMENSION just released a double CD titled "Revolution" on November 28th ...Their 2007's "Ego" was intriguing enough to catch my attention, so once again my curiosity had leads me to ask my Editor for the review task, now i'm in duty for the analysis of this third work by DIMENSION. Not an easy job, a challenge, I must confess...However, the musicianship is stellar and the musical adventurous spirit is set exactly in my favorite style! A demanding way, pretty audacious, tricky, cerebral ("Resistance") and even slightly irreverent (the covers), or maybe a little pretentious ("Pale Horse"); I like this maverick state of mind...But sometimes I should reveal that I had an hard time to connect with them, in order to focus and fully catch their ultimate goal ("The Source")!
I'm still uncertain and balanced in my judgement, because the skills are more than obvious and the audacity should be encouraged, but somehow the songwriting mode is too hermetic or too rigorous! Each player received his moment of glory in this extravanganza of sounds, from insane drumming to fast shredding solos exchange between guitar and keys ("The End Of All Things") the entire catalogue of licks is displayed for my biggest pleasure : Really impressive. The vocals are quite good and diverse ("New Day") but weirdly mixed, maybe a step behind the instrumental wizardry. To summarize my thoughts: All you might expect from a talented and Modern Progressive Metal band is here and the track that spread for over than nineteen minutes, "Dream War" is a perfect example of this fact. Indeed, disc Two, track three, you'll find "Dream War", it's an Epic complicated piece, with unexpected drawers, very convoluted with great instrumental passages full of technical prowess. It contains certainly some of the heaviest parts of the double disc package, notably some incredible staccatto synchronized parts, while sharing some hetherogeneous pace, coming back and forth within the song structure, the alternancy of ethereal atmospheric trends and sudden rage explosions. It's finally quite similar to what the whole album is...A musical rollercoaster! This powerful trio is back after a period of six years of silence, with a provoking thematic ("Welcome to America"), a ferocious brand new Artistic method, some ultra complex moments, some weird patterns, a bunch of odd time signatures ("The Waltz Of Death"and its EVERGREY similarity), updated with a real majestic virtuosity ("Angel") or inhuman instrumental mastery and two fantastic cover songs, one at the end of each silver platters. "Eleanor Rigby" from the BEATLES repertoire is closing the disc number one in great fashion, this song is butchered and amputated in order to give some dangerous shivers and a few cold sweat to Paul McCartney for the next decade! "Immigrant Song " originally written by LED ZEPPELIN also received a special makeover a special treatment and it remains also a solid rendition of this classic Rock song. Maybe their ambitions were too big for their own shoes or maybe my mind is not clever enough to absorb all this...Anyway, the album is spectacular/exciting but very difficult to tame, and even more challenging to capture it in its deepest meaning essence...My verdict is, try it ...Because they deserve your Progressive curiosity!<
