Elected Evil
Die No More

First and foremost, I'd like to make it clear that Thrash Metal is a genre I've never been all that keen on. Why? I find that all bands in that genre are the same with their music which is usually very heavy, very loud and very fast. Don't get me wrong, I like that type of thing in my music but there's something about Thrash Metal which puts me off but it's hard to explain why.
Every time I get a new Thrash Metal promo for review, I start to have my doubts about how it could be any different to the previous one I heard but nevertheless, as a music journalist I must give the music I listen to a chance to see if it is indeed different in a good way that makes me like it.
Today's Thrash Metal offering comes from the UK band DIE NO MORE who this year release their debut CD "Elected Evil" which is out on November 3rd 2014 on Rocksector Records. This quartet are from Penrith in Cumbria, UK and so far this group have released one EP and one debut album which is soon to be released and will be the focus of this review.
One niggle I've always had about Thrash Metal bands is that they try to focus too much on the savagery of the music by seeing how loud and how fast they can shred while screaming lyrics that when you listen will make no sense whatsoever and will always force you to resort to the lyrics in the album booklet every single time.
So is this album the same as those that are unlistenable or does it have something that makes it different? Well upon first listens, it doesn't seem to walk the path of other Thrash Metal albums out there as for one thing, you can actually hear the music instead of it being buried under a wall of uninterpretable noise. The lyrics too are also identifiable, most of the time that is but actually being able to hear what is being said in a Thrash Metal song is actually quite surprising.
So what about the music? As mentioned you can actually hear the music which is quite surprising for me, as the very first Thrash Metal albums I got when starting my music journalism career, were mostly unlistenable as I couldn't really make out the music or the vocals in the music but here, it's the opposite as I can actually make out the music so that means I can hear every riff, every solo and every drumbeat without being assaulted by noise that makes my ears hurt.
So what about the vocal performance? I always assume that Thrash Metal singers can never really sing as they focus too much on screaming and growling and trying to sound too heavy. Some singers can sort of sing but most of the time you either cannot hear what is being said or are left disappointed by a piss poor vocal performance. The vocals on "Elected Evil" are good for the most part and you can hear most of the words in the lyrics but there are parts where the vocal performance could be a bit better but it's surprisingly alright for what it is.
So what is my overall verdict on DIE NO MORE's debut? I have to say I was quite surprised as I thought it would be just like the early Thrash Metal albums I reviewed for the site but it doesn't appear to be like that one bit as for one thing I actually enjoyed listening to it. This however is not enough to make me a Thrash Metal fan because although I was quite surprised by this album, the genre as a whole is still not my cup of tea but if that is your thing and you do like Thrash Metal then this will make a neat addition to your collection.
