Starting and ending in the blink of an eye, Philadelphia-based Grindcore/Punk outfit DIE CHOKING's self-titled debut EP is bound to floor the listener before they even know what happened. The group takes no prisoners with this brief yet blistering offering, recorded at Mark It Zero Studios with Brutal Truth guitarist Dan O'Hare.

Clocking in at about 5 ½ minutes in length, the EP still packs enough of a punch to level buildings, shatter bones, and be back home in time for tea. The riffs fly forth at a frantic pace, but it's Joshua Cohen's blinding, light-speed drumming that really makes this music what it is. What's most impressive is that, according to the group's Facebook page, Cohen uses single-pedal drums, making his display of ungodly speed even more impressive.

Save for two, maybe three small sections, the band hardly ever lets up. "Low Finality, "Momentum," and "Reason Resist  I  Reason Reborn" are nothing but non-stop chaos, while "Greed War" alternates high-speed brutality with slower, powerful grooves. "Uninstall" rages out of the gates with its semi-thrashy, semi-Black Metal riffs before slowing to a crawl for the last half of the song.

DIE CHOKING don't waste any time trying to be cute or drawing out their music unnecessarily, which helps the music feel fresh even after repeat listens. The band, to their credit, gives a very tight performance while playing at incredible speeds. While bands like NAPALM DEATH have a clearly audible impact on the band's sound, I also picked up bits of RIPPING CORPSE, partly due to the malevolent nature of some of the riffs as well as Paul Herzog's hoarse bellowing. Well-produced and unapologetically fast and heavy, "Die Choking" should appeal to all fans of Grindcore and Death Metal. Don't miss out on this one.
