Devil You Know - The Beauty Of Destruction album cover

Metal supergroups are a beautiful and brutal thing; the coming together of great minds to create a special kind of music; lest I mention names such as SOEN. DEVIL YOU KNOW, comprised of members previously belonging to extremely well-established metal bands, have come together with ex-KILLSWITCH ENGAGE pipesman to put out a debut album. Originally formed by John Sankey and Francesco Artusato, recruiting a voice like Howard Jones was only a natural choice.

"A New Beginning" is just that. This track signifies the start of something truly great. Combining a powerful mix of groove and old-school Metalcore, the riff delivery in the verse is as intense as it is groove-ridden and technical. Jones displays extremely powerful deliveries of harsh vocals on this track; soon to be counterbalanced by glorious clean vocals on "My Own". This track blends energetic, heavy riffs with smatterings of technical licks, which shines through on a virtuosic solo, yet prides itself on its uplifting, breath-taking chorus.

"For the Dead and Broken" is dragged through the mud of melancholy and brings with it a primal, vindictive energy. Jones' clean vocals are brought to the front and dominate the track with soulful croons, not too unlike Matt Barlow at times, his inflections and nuances placing him above many singers in the genre. "The Killer" is a very strong Metalcore track, steeped in heavy, chugged grooves but laden with airy, soaring atmospherics, and an especially stellar vocal delivery. Eventually, the track begins to transcending genre boundaries, and grows into an unbridled mass of boiling fury.

A band created by musicians of such an already-established caliber need only look to the future; from that future we can expect some of the best groove-ridden Metalcore that Heavy Metal has to offer.
