Fate Is Your Muse
Devil To Pay

July 15, 2013
With no time to decide, Indianapolis rockers DEVIL TO PAY grab you by the collar and toss you right into the middle of driving riffs. Like all followers of intuition, DEVIL TO PAY has jammed and listened, without intricate design, to produce "Fate Is Your Muse". All of their influences gelled into what we hear in its twelve tracks.
Although this is their 4th release, "Fate Is Your Muse" has been 10-years coming in its lyrical concept. Lead singer and songwriter, Steve Janiak's epiphanies moment has brought to the Rock genre his message of metaphysical searching. He invites us to look around to challenge the world without and within as we toss about in a riff tide.
It's all too easy to get caught up in the instrumentation. But wait, there's more. This is an album of layers. Listen once. Listen twice. Listen thrice. It's chock full of musical influences and messages. Read the lyrics. They are continued proof that the world is waking up. The initial messages that listeners may catch include, "Fate is your muse. The end is what we choose" ("Already Dead"). "You are the eternal master of your every single thought" ("Black, Black Heart"). The top track addresses the notion of an apocalypse. "This Train Won't Stop" speaks especially to all the hub-bub from 2012. Janiak points out that this wasn't the only prediction of the end of the world. There will be more.
It has been suggested that DEVIL TO PAY stylistically borrows from the 70s and 80s. There certainly seems to be more. The trance state from the background riffs of "Yes Master" feels like a Woodstock moment with echoes of 90s grunge vocals. "Beyond The Ether," seems a four-decade musical time machine. The voicing and instrumentation whooshes you from one time to another. Particularly impressive was Janiak's moments of channeling the grit and passion of Janis Joplin.
This is one band I would personally like to see out there beyond the Indianapolis scene and a few festivals. Listen. I hope you will agree dear reader.
