DETRAKTOR release their debut album, despite going through 2 bass players before Juan Andres. INDIKON LEAD's Jerónimo Méndez Mallo was the band's original bass player, although he has hired after that band released their one and only demo in 2016, "Sunday Thrash" and Mallo was then gone by the time the band released their first EP the year after, "Size Matters". In between the releases Alvaro Lillo (Execrator, Kako Daimon, Undercroft, Xalpen, Watain (live), ex-Hellfire, ex-Hostile Reaction) filled in for the live performances before thw band hired Juan Andres in 2018. The band is a mix up of nationalities. A Chilean duo of Chewie & Juan, a Brazilian: Coruja and a Bulgarian: Boris. They met as a band in Canada, and are now in Hamburg, Germany. So geography must be a fun subject. A drummer as the lead vocals is a very unusual role. Will it work out, or will they be sent to the grinder?
"Paraita" holds neither intro, nor anything back. A bombardment from the off. Seems like they are warming up. The vocals hold up well, even I have no idea what they are saying. Instrumentally, they have a great pace and overall balance in the song. It has an old school Thrash feel to it, which is great. It has raw aggression built in to the sound. If one of these lads had CAVALERA blood running through them, you wouldn't be shocked. They have true talent. Solid start, with the lads flexing their instrumental muscles. "Not Many More" truly has a South American feel to it. Mixed with a North American and Germanic Thrash style. The build up is great, the melody is effective. There is no one part of the band craving more attention, the nucleus is solid together. It has the same kind of feel to old school KREATOR, with a good build up, nice speed and controlling the song. Only thing missing is a bit of the heavier, pulsating drums.
"El Sunday" is not slowing down the album. It picks the drums back up, which is good to hear. Boris and Chewie clearly know how to control speed and allow a TESTAMENT style build up to influx the song with different kind of aspects. The vocals are back to being short, quick and crucial. The band clearly have a good understanding of one another. You can hear it in the play that they all know what to do. It builds up so well, never losing control and just sounds awesome. There is a lot of Bay Area Thrash influences here. Guitar play is phenomenal, a true thrash masterpiece. I think TESTAMENT would be proud of this one. "Pride" is back to the short vocals, a bit more Hardcore style than Thrash, but this is because there is no need for long bursts of vocals without being able to appreciate them and the instrumentalists. The song is a bit slower, but again, it is controlled. These guys can easily be the next TESTAMENT, following a great style. It breaks down pace for the album, but allows you to appreciate what is going on. Don't worry, you'll still bang your head and tap your feet to this great beat.
"Grinder" shows how they can develop into a more Technical Thrash aspect if they so require. This song shows off on how good these guys are. They have created an immense sound that all metal heads need to hear. The guitars and bass are in perfect harmony together. Vocally, they don't need to do much more as this style doesn't require long chorus', they have hit the mark very well. At this point in the album, I'm running out of new ways to praise their sound!
Great debut album! You can hear all sorts of influences in here from SEPULTURA to TESTAMENT and KREATOR. They know how to blend all styles as one. If you're a fan of old school Thrash, then you have to love this album. It's a throwback and I want to find out what more the band can do. They'd be an ideal touring opener for SOULFLY or CAVALERA CONSPIRACY. The aggression they show never ends, they will show passion throughout.
